While giving your age to your character is often fine in a lot of fandoms where the characters are normally pretty young (Pokemon, Naruto, etc.), in One Piece its rarely okay.

This might partially be because a lot of younger writers tend to base their characters of themselves (Usually a better version of themselves), age included. While there are some exceptions in the series, most pirates are a bit older as young teens/children would be of little use on a pirate ship, and yet so many OC's are between the ages of 14 and 18. Try to create OC's who are a little older. Since having 'D.' in a characters name means they will leave a great mark on the world, it often comes off as a bit Sueish. Its perfectly fine to get inspiration from cannon/other people's characters or take small/common details from them, but don't just outright copy.Īvoid putting 'D.' in your characters name. This also goes for taking something important and unique to a cannon character (Backstory, power, etc.), or creating a character so that they replace an important/main canon character. This should go without saying, but it is never a good idea to take a cannon character and just change a few things like their gender, name, personality, outfit, or powers and call them a new character.
